Aalto University is a newly created university from the merger of three Finnish universities: the Helsinki School of Economics, the Helsinki University of Art and Design and the Helsinki University of Technology - all leading and renowned institutions in their respective fields and in their own right. The combination of three universities opens up new possibilities for strong multi-disciplinary education and research. Aalto University is strongly future-oriented while at the same time building on the combined 300-year-history of three highly-regarded universities.

Aalto University School of Science and Technology (Former Helsinki University of Technology) is the premier technical university unit in Finland and with 15 000 students it is one of the largest in the Nordic region. High-level scientific research and education are the main cornerstones of the school.

The Department of Communications and Networking (ComNet) is the primary site of research for the QUASAR project in Aalto. ComNet is a multi-disciplinary unit of research and higher education covering communications and networking technology, networking business and human centric communications. ComNet has a well established research in wireless communications, sensor networks, future internet, technoeconomics and human factors in telecommunications, information and teletraffic theory. In its area, ComNet is the largest unit in Finland. The department was formed in 2008 as a result of merging the more than 60-year-old Networking laboratory and the more than 40-year-old Communications Laboratory. The Wireless Communications and Networks group at ComNet consists of four professors. The main research areas of the group include radio resource management, dynamic spectrum management, deployable wireless networks for public safety and military communications, wireless sensor and actuator networks, radio relays for wireless networks, multi-antenna methods (MIMO, antenna diversity methods and beamforming), mobility management, and error resilient transport in wireless networks. The group has long track record in participating national and international projects.
