UKIM

The Ss Cyril and Methodius University (UKIM) in Skopje is the first state University in the Republic of Macedonia, founded in 1949. Today, UKIM represents a functional community of 21 faculties, 5 research institutes and 11 accompanying members developing curricula in all scientific fields - social, technical, natural sciences, mathematics, medical, bio technical sciences and arts and carrying research activities at the faculties and in the independent research institutes as an integral part of the University. The illustration of UKIM through figures is as follows: around 50.000 enrolled students from Republic of Macedonia in all cycles of studies, as well as over 700 foreign students; over 2.700 teaching, research and associate academic staff at the faculties and at the institutes; over 126.000 graduated high-professional staff (with obtained Bachelor degree); over 5,300 candidates obtained Master’s degree; over 2,700 doctors of science in all teaching and scientific fields.

UKIM participates in the QUASAR project through the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies (FEEIT) and Wireless Networks Group (WiNGroup) at FEEIT, led by prof. Liljana Gavrilovska. FEEIT is the most prestigious higher education institution in the country providing undergraduate and graduate studies in a wide range of electrical engineering disciplines. Its expertise is recognized and well known in the society and broader covering the main areas within the field of telecommunication networks. WiNGroup is a research oriented group carrying organized research work in many areas within the wireless networking paradigm.

WiNGroup’s research is currently targeted at cognitive networking, spectrum measurements, future networks architectures, cross-layer optimizations in short range ad-hoc environments, interoperability and resource management in heterogeneous wireless systems and applications of sensor networks. The group has its own laboratory equipped with a 6 node USRP2 based testbed, spectrum measurement devices (some of them custom made), sensor network testbed and state-of-the-art simulation platform QualNet. WiNGroup’s expertise is renowned through its participation in several international projects (FP7-ARAGORN, FP7-FARAMIR, FP7-ProSense, NATO SfP RIWCoS). Members of the group were previously actively involved in other international projects such as FP6 MAGNET Beyond, FP6 MAGNET, FP5 PACWOMAN, FP4 ASAP, several TEMPUS projects and several domestic applicative and research oriented projects. The ongoing research is presented through conference and journal papers, examples include IEEE DySPAN, IEEE PIMRC, Microwave Review etc.

UKIM has a well established cooperation with the Macedonian industry, universities and other academic institutions, especially from neighboring countries. It plays important role in national regulation and standardization and network planning activities.
